New blog at The Deadly Vixens

Hi everyone! My blog this week on The Deadly Vixens is about how I'm preparing for National Novel Writing Month. Hop on over and take a peek! =) I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Website updates, etc

Hi everyone! I did a few updates to my website today, so make sure to check them out. I've added an MP3 of me reading the blurb to Melody of Love, so make sure to check it out in the My Books section. Also, I added an article I wrote a while back to the For Writers section about discipline and how I've struggled with it myself.

I've been doing well on editing my paranormal romance. I've completed two moderately long chapters so far. I also began toying around with an spicy romance short story that I started a few years ago. I rewrote the beginning of it, and now it's tossing me in a direction that undermines its original purpose. It's so exciting when things like that happen! =)

I will have the newsletter out by Friday. This weekend I'll also be going out of town, so that'll be exciting. It's been a while since I've been on vacation. And it's so desperately needed!

Anyways! I hope you all check out the new goodies I posted on my website and sign up for the mailing list.

Writing progress/Special news

I've been working on my next novel recently, which is one that actually was the first novel I ever started. It's a romantic suspense piece that I'm excited about. I've also been working on editing the paranormal romance that I completed the other day. It's really interesting to go back to the beginning of a story and start editing since sometimes it's surprising to see what you have written. I began the paranormal romance novel last November, so rest assure, I have let it that part rest for a good long while!

Also, here's some news that is very special to me. Today I posted an interview I had the honor of doing with Rhonda Penders, Editor-in-Chief, of The Wild Rose Press at The Deadly Vixens. It really has a long of excellent advice. Make sure to visit and ask questions since she'll be answering the questions as she stops by off and on today!

I hope to see you there!

Great news!

Hi everyone. I know I should crawl out of my hole more often, and I will really try to! I do have some great news to share. I have completed a 390 page paranormal romance novel. Hooray! Now I have to go back through and edit it. Yuck! =) I'll try to get back into the habit of blogging on an almost daily basis.

I haven't done a newsletter in a couple of months either, and I'll work on getting another one of those up by the end of this month to all of you on the mailing list. If you haven't joined yet, you'll be eligible to win my drawing plus get a sneak peak of the novel I just completed if you sign up.

This week over at The Deadly Vixens, we're having The Wild Rose Press week where we've interviewed a few of editors and will be having a couple of authors blogging with us. Make sure to check it out!

Well, that's all I can think of for now.

Guest Blogging w/ Gracen Miller

Here with me today is my friend, Gracen Miller. Please give her a warm welcome and make sure to leave a comment to be entered into her contest.

Thank you, Sarah, for inviting me to be a guest here on your blog! I’m honored by the opportunity.

Wow! This has been a really crazy, wild and exciting week. My debut book, The Devil’s Den, was released on April 1, 2008, with Firedrakes Weyr Publishing. It is a paranormal romance set in present day. For those of you interested, it is not a book for the faint at heart and has some really intense and violent scenes.

Blurb: It was the opportunity of a lifetime, or so Meredith told her best friend, Serena. It had Serena thinking Meredith was finally eligible for the looney-bin. Meredith was talking about monsters and fairytales, some real wacko smack bordering on insanity as far as Serena was concerned. So, when Meredith disappeared, there was only one thing Serena could do, take matters into her own hands and investigate the local criminal hotspot, The Devil’s Den. The bar was as seedy and decadent as it was reputed to be. And the creature she found there—Six was his first, middle and last name—was nothing short of terrifying, his abilities completely defying logic. Yet, it was easier for Serena to pretend he was not all that he claimed.

Born over 3,000 years ago, Six is a vampire who has become jaded and spoiled by his feral power and immortality. Humans are nothing more significant than toys to be played with and in fact his favorite sport is to locate the most innocent of victims and then torture them cruelly before taking their lives. Even with his supernatural arrogance, nothing could have prepared Six for the sudden unexplainable desire he feels toward the human, Serena. Serena, a karate instructor happy with her bland, boring life, launches his demoralized existence into a chaotic mess.

Through their tangled encounters, Six is surprised when he realizes he has found his salvation in the one thing he despises most…humanity. And Serena having never been the adventurous type, but instead having always taken the safer route her entire life, finds adventure when she needs it most and wanted it the least.

I would love some feedback from anyone that reads The Devil’s Den. Tell me what you liked and what you didn’t like. You can contact me with a review at contact@gracenmiller.com.

The evening of April 1st, I participated in an internet talk radio show, The Dragon’s Den, with Firedrakes Weyr CEO/Editor-in-Chief, Peggy Roberts. You can listen to an archive here, if you’re interested. Enter the site, click on “Archives” and then select “Peggy Roberts – Dragon’s Den”. I swear I do not sound that southern! I wonder if we all have problems listening to ourselves played back? I know I cringe each time I hear myself.

Afterward, I participated in a live chat with Sarah in the Firedrakes chat room. After more than four hours of chatting, Sarah, Sierra Wolfe and I formed Deadly Vixens Yahoo! Group! I’m really excited about hooking up with these two authors! We’d love for you to come join us, tell us about yourself, your family, whether your write or just read, and anything else you would care to share. We would also love for you to join our blog, The Deadly Vixens, give us feedback and comments, even suggest a topic or two you would like for us to write about.

I have been writing since I was in sixth grade, when my English teacher introduced me to the deistic power of writing. Having written for over two decades does not make me an expert writer. Each time I pen a new story I hope I have improved on my skill. More importantly, I hope I have entertained the reader.

I live in Alabama with my very active family, which consist of three boys (my husband being the third and biggest kid), and a cat and dog that jointly own me. Presently, I work from home as a part-time paralegal and a full-time shuttle-bus for my two sports inclined boys.

If you leave a comment or feedback, then you'll be entered for a chance to win a bookmark, and maybe even a copy of my book, too!

Purchase your copy of The Devil's Den at http://www.firedrakesweyr.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_book_info&cPath=74&products_id=186&zenid=08497fb353ca03ca183da5cf2e8e36a5

Monday, April 7

Hi everyone! Today was my guest blogging day at Michelle Pillow's blog.... http://www.michellepillow.com/blog. Also, tomorrow I will post a flash fiction story at The Deadly Vixens' author blog, so make sure to check it out! http://www.deadlyvixens.blogspot.com/ It was a lot of fun to write and paranormal. Woohoo!

Things have been busy around my household. Also busy with writing related things. I have gotten 1.5 pages edited on my current WIP, which isn't the best, but it's fairly good. Not too much else I can think of right now! It's bedtime! =)

Saturday, March 29

Hello everyone! Things have been pretty hectic around here recently with the launch of my debut novel coming April 1st. I have added an appearances section to the right so that you'll know where I will be and when. I'm excited to announce that my first interview has been posted. You can find it at Night Owl Romances: http://www.nightowlromance.com/nightowlromance/interviews/sarahmakela.asp. It's so invigorating to see my book cover and an interview I've done on a review site. I hope you all will take a look and comment to let me know what you think.

Soon I'll be starting a newsletter and the people who sign up for that will be automatically entered each month into the contest drawings for prizes. I'll be posting more about that within a few days.

A little over 2 days until my Melody of Love is released! I've been working on editing a novella-length work-in-progress to submit and also finishing writing a novel-length WIP.

Sunday, March 23

Happy Easter everyone! I hope you're having a great day. There hasn't been too much more news to share. I have been hard at work on my paranormal romance, AF. I'm less than 9,000 words away from THE END. It's so exciting since it'll be my second completed novel-length manuscript. I'll keep you updated on that.

The time is getting ever closer for Melody of Love to be released! So here is a second excerpt to whet your appetite! =)

Excerpt #2:

The phone rang again, and it was Alex.

“Hey, I’m on my way up, okay?” he said.

“That’s great,” Kathryn said, starting to feel the jitters.

“Oh, no problem. I’m going to try to act like a gentleman.” He laughed and it sounded like the sweetest sound to her ears. She loved listening to happy laughter.

“I’m sure you’ll do fine in that regard,” she joked.

“Thanks for your vote of confidence. I’ll try not to disappoint.”

She could hear him walking up stairs over the phone. He was getting closer because she could hear the click clack of footsteps outside her door. She glanced through the peephole and saw him standing there as sexy as could be in a black button up shirt and slacks. Oh my God. He was gorgeous. She had never been able to call a man gorgeous before.

“Well, I’m here,” he said through the phone. “Should I knock?”

“Hmmm. Yeah. You might need to.” She laughed.

“Okay then.” She watched as he knocked on the door. She could see the way the jacket fit him so perfectly when he reached for the door.

“Oh, just a second, there’s someone at the door,” she said and opened the door. “Oh! It’s you.” She smiled. Her mind was blown. It was good she had worn what she did, or she would have felt completely underdressed! With him, she now knew there were adventures and surprises on the way. She didn’t want him to have some fancy restaurant reservations and her show up looking like she walked in off the street.

“Wow. You look very nice,” she commented.

“I could definitely say the same thing about you. You’re beautiful.”

I also have some exciting information from a TARA chapter mate. Julie Leto is doing some great giveaways at her blog, http://www.plotmonkeys.com, starting Monday! She's not only giving away a chapter a day of her upcoming paranormal romance, PHANTOM PLEASURES, but she's also sweetening the pot by offering a $20 Amazon/Borders gift card per day to anyone who leaves a comment.

Book trailer for Melody of Love

Hello everyone! I just finished working on Melody of Love's book trailer. Check it out and leave a comment. =) Enjoy!

Monday, March 17

I hope everyone is having a wonderful St. Patrick's Day and wearing green! Just in time to celebrate, I can finally announce that Melody of Love will be available on April 1, 2008!

Here's the blurb:

Kathryn Walker's life is great, except for one area. Love. Still reeling from the disappointment of past relationships, her world is sent spinning when danger encroaches on her simple life.

Alex Brown is a rock star dealing with betrayal, but once he meets Kathryn... His sights are set.

Could love be enough to sustain them through the hardship ahead?

Here's the excerpt:

"I better be going," Kathryn said, yet stayed in his arms.

"Do you have to?" Alex asked.

She sighed. "Yeah, I have to. I have work tomorrow." She looked up at him, and he back down at her. Their eyes met and held each other's. A spark of passion leapt between them.

He leaned down and pressed a kiss against Kathryn's lips. She wasn't reluctant, but it seemed like she didn't have much experience with kissing, not because she was bad at it, but because she didn't seem use to it. He judged and weighed how far he should go by how much further she was letting him go.

Alex deepened the kiss and placed his hand on her shoulder to massage the exposed skin there. She flinched, so he slowed the pace of the kiss and pulled back.

He looked down into her eyes, which seemed to be sparkling. He could tell that she enjoyed the kiss probably as much as he did, but wasn't certain that was possible. He smiled at her and pulled her back into a warm hug.

"That was wonderful," she murmured against his chest.

"Yes, it was," he replied. He pressed another kiss against the top of her head. "You drive safely and make sure to call me when you get home, so that I know you made it, okay?"

Kathryn nodded. "I will." She smiled and picked up her purse then they were headed for the door. He walked her out to her car and they kissed once more.

"Have a good night, Kathryn."

"You too."

The website is finished with the contruction, so make sure you go check it out. Not too much has changed with it, but I now have a picture under bio and there have been several tweaks here and there. I've been writing for the past couple of days, but I am biting at the bit to start promoting my book Melody of Love and give y'all something to whet your appetite. I turned over my final edits to the editor-in-chief today, so that's a good step, and I've been promoting to friends and family members... I'd like all the sales I can get =)

I can give the blurb to Melody of Love, so here it is! Hope you enjoy it, and I will have more on the book as soon as I can. Make sure to leave a comment!

Wednesday, March 5

Well, yesterday was the radio program, if you missed it you can check it out in the archives at http://internetvoicesradio.com/Arch-DragonsDen.htm. Click play on the March 4th player. The program went well. Peggy Roberts, the editor-in-chief and CFO of Firedrakes Weyr Publishing, and I talked about reviews and editing tips. I also discussed my upcoming release, Melody of Love, as well as my work in progress. Take a listen to it and let me know what you think.

Construction on my website is continuing. I now have a My Books page up where you can get more information on my works in progress as well as Melody of Love. It still needs tweaked, but it's looking good so far. =)

Speaking of my works in progress, I have been progressing forward with my current project even though it is going slow. This beginning is leaving me a little frustrated since it feels to be going so slow and even though I've written about the characters before and know about them, getting into their heads is challenging. Then again, I tend to feel a little bit of frustration during the beginning chapters. For me, I have to just charge forward until I have a better handle on the characters since I don't focus too much on character profiles beforehand. I go into the story with basic information and an idea of them in my head, which is sometimes tossed aside by my characters within the first few pages, especially in the case of AF much to my chagrin.

That's all for now. =)

Monday, March 3

Got some writing done on book 2 of the For Love and Music series. Woot! I remember now how hard beginnings can be to write. I feel rather disconnected from the characters and don't feel like we've been fully introduced yet, even though both of them appeared in Melody of Love. It's odd, but... that's just part of the process, I guess. Construction on the website will begin tomorrow. I'll be adding some new content to it, so watch out for that.

Also, tomorrow at 8PM EST is the internet radio show. http://www.pivtr.com Don't forget! ;)

That's all that I can think of for now. I'll blog again tomorrow to tell about how the internet radio show went.

Sunday, March 2

Today has been quite a day! I finished my first round of edits for MOL and sent them back to my editor. Now I'll be waiting to see what she thinks of them. Woohoo! I also worked on my book trailer for MOL. Yippee! So far it's looking good, in my humble opinion! I still have a few things to edit and tweak with it before I'll post it, but there shouldn't be too long of a wait.

Also, for those interested, I will be participating in the Dragon's Den radio program for Passionate Internet Voices Talk Radio on March 4th at 8 p.m. EST. The link is http://www.pivtr.com.

And then I will be participating in a chat at Romance at Heart Magazine for Firedrakes Weyr authors on March 11th at 8 p.m. EST. The link for that is http://chat.romanceatheart.com/.

That's all I can think of for now!

Cover Art

Boy! It's been a while since I have last blogged. I'll have to not let such a large time span between postings happen again. Seems like just yesterday was St. Valentine's Day.

Now on to my current news: Hooray! I finally got my cover art done today. It looks nice, too! Even goes well with my website. =) I'll post more about that when I can.

On the editing front, I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it's been a challenge with this work, MELODY OF LOVE. I can't wait to finish it.

That's all for now though. It's been a long day.

Thursday, February 14

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Not too much to tell for now.

Wednesday, February 13

Hi everyone. Sorry it's been so quiet recently. My family has been sick and so I've been recovering and taking care of them. I've also been entranced by an amazing XBOX 360 game, Assassin's Creed. The graphics are wonderful... beautiful... the music is as well. The story was fascinating and made me want to know more, and it was all done fantasically! I'm so sad that the game is over. I loved it and can't wait until Assassin's Creed 2 comes out.

As for the writing front, I received my edits for my manuscript MELODY OF LOVE. I'm excited about that and have begun editing it. My first editor revisions! Hooray!

Friday, February 8

Hooray! Today I broke 75k! I'm so happy about that! I'm just 4.5k from achieving my goal of 80,000 words, but I'm coming to realize that it doesn't look like the novel will be able to finish itself in that amount of words since I wrote 4k today that didn't get me nearly as far as I thought it would. Looking at books with 100,000 (or more!) words makes me feel overwhelmed like I could never do that, but this novel is showing me that 80k isn't really that much.

Anyways, today's writing was hard since I had to try to figure out a way to get myself out of a "problem" that I'd thought of. I did somewhat, but I know I'll have to go later in the story and figure it out. What was I having trouble with? Ah, well you'll have to wait a little to find out, now won't you? =P

Not too much else I can think of for now, so I'm calling it a night. =)

'Night!

Wednesday, February 6

Hello! I'm feeling really happy about today because I broke 70k words for my novel AF!! Hooray!! I feel like the end is in sight! Maybe not as much as I'd like it to be, but it's finally visible!

Also, on a side note, I mentioned yesterday that I received my PRO pin, and for y'all who might not know, that is a pin given by Romance Writers of America to writers who are pursuing publication. To have gotten it, I submitted my completed manuscript, Melody of Love, to Firedrakes Weyr. I'm waiting now for my revisions from them, but with the grand opening just happening a few days ago, I am trying to be patient! But, I really can't wait for them.

In the meantime, I'm going to bed, and I'm so trying to complete AF soon to have yet another completed manuscript out there. =)

Tagged

Hello everyone!

I've been tagged by my friend Wendi Darlin. Here's how it works:

The rules of this meme are simple.

1. Link back to the person who tagged you.

2. Post the rules on your blog.

3. Share six unimportant things about yourself.

4. Tag six random people at the end of your blog entry.

5. Let the tagged people know by leaving a comment on their blogs.

Six unimportant things about me:

1. I love cats now, but used to be dog-obsessed. (Dogs are good, too, but I wouldn't trade in my cats for the world.)

2. When I'm out I tend to order Margaritas.

3. Video/computer games make me instantly addicted, so I have to control myself when I play them. Especially since I should be writing!

4. I love to sleep. It can be a hobby of sorts at times, but again, one that I have to watch closely.

5. Sometimes I feel homesick for Finland, even though it's not technically my "home," but I did spend almost 2 months there this past summer and over a week there the summer before that.

6. I got my PRO pin today! =) So it's important, I had to toss something in the last slot.

I'm tagging:

Erica Ridley
Anne-Marie Carroll
Vicki Lane
Sandra Coburn

Today is the Grand Opening of Firedrakes Weyr Publishing, so hop on over there and join in the celebration! http://www.firedrakesweyr.com

This weekend I will be away at a writer's retreat with my local chapter of Romance Writers of America. Hooray! We're going to be spending time and learning from Michael Hauge, a screenwriter expert, and I really can't wait!

My goal is to finish Adrienne within the next couple of days and begin working completely on the next book in my "For Love and Music" series (first book will be coming soon from Firedrakes Weyr).

Sunday, January 27

Update

Just an update to the earlier post. The archives are up from the Dragon's Den radio show earlier today. You can listen to it now at http://internetvoicesradio.com/Arch-DragonsDen.htm. Click play on the radio stream called "January 27, 2008 Introduction to EBook Publishing Company."

Drop a comment and let me know what you think! I'm the fourth author to talk about their book.

Lots of news to share

I sold a book to Firedrakes Weyr! Hooray! As of right now I'm not sure on the release date, but when I find out I'll let you guys know, too. I'm so excited to begin this new process. I turned in my cover art information as well, so I can't wait to see the results of that, too!

Today, I'll be participating in a radio show at Passionate Voices Internet Radio between 3pm - 4pm EST. Listen in if you can!

That's all for now. I'll share more when I know it!

Tuesday, January 22

I broke 61k, so far, yay! It feels good to be that much closer to the end of the book. It is starting to flow again for me, and I finished another chapter, which is great since some of these I've been hopping back and forth between!

That's all for now.

'Night

Thursday, January 17

Tonight was a great productive day. I wrote a little over a thousand words and did a little work on another idea I have planned, too. I'm really trying to push to get Adrienne done by Jan. 31st. That is my ideal goal. Hey, but I'm getting closer and closer as time goes on, right?

I broke 59k today. Tomorrow I'm planning on being as productive if, hopefully, even more productive. The pace I had during National Novel Writing Month was beautiful, if only it was possible for me to keep that pace year round. I honestly don't know what I'd do if I were that blessed/cursed. heh

Anyways! I'm going to bed now.

'Night!

Saturday, January 12

Today was a great day. I went to TARA (Tampa Area Romance Authors) for the monthly workshop, and it was very helpful and very appropriate for what I'm working on right now. If you get the time, check out Erica Ridley's website and blog (listed under the blogs I visit section). She did a workshop on websites, and she also has articles on her website about the topic. The other topic was goals, also wonderful.

I broke 57k on my current WIP. Yay!

Not too much other information that I want to give at the moment. Another milestone with the short contemporary romance happened today, but I'll share that when I feel its appropriate. =)

As for now, 'night!

Thursday, January 10

I am pretty excited about some things that will be happening soon. I can't really talk about it now since it's not definitive, but hopefully you guys will be knowing it soon enough. All I can say for now is that I am taking my Short Contemporary off of the page count/word counter section. It has something special for it in the near future. =)

As for now, I have some new ideas for my current WIP, so off I go!

Not too much new to discuss besides from the fact that classes have started again at my university. I can't wait to graduate though, which will be upon finishing my summer semester. Yippee.

I have been submitting a children's picture book. I received five rejection letters and a request for more information. I really hope something comes about with the request for more information! Or one of the other fourteen query letters out there. Three are about at the time when I'm guessing it's a "no response means rejection" kind of thing, but...the way I feel is that a rejection just means that I'm putting myself out there, so I don't take them too personal. I do feel a little bit of frustration at first, but then I pick myself back up and push on. Hooray!

Not too much else I can think of. I've been trying to work on my writing project and my editing project, but for the past two days not much has been happening. Ugh. I had wanted to write today, but then I got an injury and rested instead. There's always tomorrow (today since it's 12:34 AM)!

Hello everyone! My website and blog got a matching makeover, so check it out! Let me know what you think. My goal for the month is to finish my nanowrimo novel (started in November), and also to get my nanowrimo novel from 2005, which is finished, completely edited. I'll have a page counter over on the side so that you can see how many pages I have edited of it.

I want this year to be a very productive one. Perhaps this will be the year where I'll transcend the pre-published status, and become a published author. Hooray!
